Police in Colorado are hoping that the discovery of missing puppies could provide crucial information about the death of a dog breeder: "This case is so unusual."
On his Idaho Springs property, 10 purebred Doberman puppies were discovered missing, and Paul Peavey was found dead.
The discovery of a missing litter of purebred Doberman puppies could be the key to solving the mysterious death of a renowned dog breeder, an expert stated.
On Saturday, a search party of concerned family members discovered the body of Paul Peavey, 57, on his 110-acre property in Idaho Springs.
On Wednesday, Jenny Fulton, the communication manager of the sheriff's office, stated that the latest litter of up to 10 puppies belonging to the man with three adult dogs was missing.
The police suspect that the microchipped animals were sold on social media. Anyone who bought a Doberman puppy in Colorado since Peavey's disappearance on Aug. 19 is urged to contact the department or take the animal to a shelter or vet for scanning.
"Brandi Hunter Munden, an American Kennel Club spokesperson, stated to Planet Chronicle Digital that the incident was a rare case that left their jaws on the ground. "We don't typically see this - this is not what the sport is all about. It's heartbreaking to see that this man lost his life, especially since he devoted his life to dogs. This behavior is not typical among dog breeders. This is definitely different," Munden said."
Peavey's Elite European Dobermans business delivered two litters this summer, and anyone who bought an animal directly from them since June should contact Clear Creek County detectives. The department posted on social media that this will help them determine how many puppies are missing.
"Fulton stated that they have received over 40 tips regarding the investigation, with approximately 25 of those tips pertaining to puppies. Out of those, he estimated that around half a dozen individuals have purchased a puppy from Paul."
Peavey's death was caused by foul play, according to the department, but they have not disclosed the specific condition he was found in. Fulton stated that more information will be released after his autopsy.
Fulton stated that we have not yet determined the motive.
The police department stated in its press release that there is no danger to the public.
The practice of stealing high-value dogs and selling them on Craigslist for a profit, known as "dog flipping," is becoming increasingly common in many parts of the United States, according to the FACE Foundation (Foundation for Animal Care and Education).
In 2022, a Long Island, New York, dog breeder's home was broken into by thieves and five French bulldog puppies and two adult dogs were stolen.
Dog thefts are usually swift, with thieves grabbing the dog from its owner outside. However, breeders are rarely targeted in this manner, according to Munden.
Victims of dog flipping are generally targeted in advance, Munden said.
Someone who had to pay attention is aware that they have a litter or an expensive dog breed.
According to Tom Davis, a dog trainer, the cost of purebred Dobermans ranges from $1,000 to $5,000.
Peavey did not reveal the pricing of his dogs on his website, but he charged $7,500 for stud services from his prized male, Jax Maximus Von Zipper.
