Police charge South Carolina man with murder after discovering roommate's remains under fire pit.
A woman who went missing 2 years ago was allegedly murdered by Sheridan Dirk Fogle.
A man from Orangeburg, South Carolina, has been arrested for murder after the remains of his former roommate were discovered buried under a fire pit in his backyard, police said.
On Thursday, the Myrtle Beach Police Department arrested 54-year-old Sheridan Dirk Fogle of Orangeburg and charged him with the murder of 51-year-old Penni Whiteside.
On May 11, 2022, a missing person and murder case was launched, and at around 7:30 a.m. on that day, the U.S. Marshals Service and Orangeburg Department of Public Safety assisted police in executing an arrest warrant at Fogle's home on Broughton Street.
"The Horry County Coroner's office announced on June 12 that the remains of Penni Whiteside were discovered buried in her home's yard in Myrtle Beach. Ms. Whiteside, who was 51 years old, was last seen in the spring of 2022. The Myrtle Beach Police Department is currently investigating her death as a homicide."
In 2022, according to police, Whiteside and Fogle resided together and an investigation revealed that neighbors' statements suggested the victim might have been buried in her home's backyard under a fire pit.
On June 12, 2024, a search warrant was obtained by investigators for the property located in the 600 block of 1st Avenue South in Myrtle Beach.
Whiteside's human remains were discovered during the property search investigation.
"The Myrtle Beach police expressed their condolences on Facebook, stating that the loss of life and the crime of violence were both tragic and senseless. They urged the community to continue praying for the family and friends of the victim."
