Over the weekend, Houthi weapons storage facilities in Yemen were targeted by U.S. forces in response to a previous attack, as announced by the U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM) on Wednesday.
Advanced conventional weapons used by Iranian-backed Houthis to target U.S. and other international military, as well as civilian vessels moving through the Red Sea and Gulf of Aden, were housed in facilities located in Houthi-controlled territories.
The F-35C stealth strike fighter was used in combat for the first time during the operation, according to a U.S. defense official.
The USS Abraham Lincoln aircraft carrier in the Gulf of Aden launched an operation that involved F-35C strike fighters, along with other assets.
The targeted operation was carried out by CENTCOM in response to the repeated and illegal attacks on international commercial shipping vessels, as well as U.S., coalition, and merchant vessels in the Red Sea, Bab al-Mandeb Strait, and Gulf of Aden by Houthi rebels.
The strikes aimed to weaken the group's capacity to intimidate regional partners.
The operation involved U.S. Navy destroyers USS Stockdale and USS Spruance, as well as U.S. Air Force and Navy aircraft, which successfully defeated a range of Houthi-launched weapons while transiting the Bab al-Mandeb Strait.
CENTCOM announced that eight one-way attack uncrewed aerial systems (OWA UAS), five anti-ship ballistic missiles (ASBMs), and four anti-ship cruise missiles (ASCMs) were successfully engaged and defeated, ensuring the safety of the ships and their personnel.
No U.S. personnel were injured, and no U.S. facilities were damaged during the operation, according to CENTCOM.
The weekend's actions by CENTCOM were aimed at safeguarding U.S. personnel, regional allies, and international shipping, while also preserving security and stability in the region.
Retaliatory strikes against Iran-associated targets in Syria were conducted by CENTCOM forces days after another operation on Monday.
"On Monday, U.S. Centcom forces carried out strikes against nine targets and two locations linked to Iranian groups in Syria in response to recent attacks on U.S. personnel in the region. According to Pentagon press secretary Maj. Gen. Patrick Ryder, these strikes aim to weaken the capability of Iranian-backed groups to plan and execute future attacks on U.S. and coalition forces, who are in the region to combat ISIS."
In response to attacks on U.S. forces, CENTCOM conducted strikes in Syria over the weekend.
