Oregon prosecutor criticizes state law's "softness" towards man convicted of 13-year-old girl's rape and murder.
Under Oregon law, Daniel Ryan Gore, 18, could be released from prison in less than a decade.
An 18-year-old Oregon man was given a life sentence for raping and murdering a 13-year-old girl, and a prosecutor is criticizing a state law that would reduce his time in prison.
Daniel Ryan Gore may be released from prison in less than a decade under the law, as he was only 16 at the time of the murder.
Senate Bill 1008, which passed five years ago and aimed to provide protection for Gore, faced heavy criticism from a Washington County prosecutor.
According to KPTV, John Gerhard, the Senior Deputy District Attorney, stated that the presiding judge in the case was taken aback upon learning about the legal protections.
Gerhard, the prosecutor, stated that he believes Gore is a violent offender who is not receiving a punishment commensurate with his actions.
KPTV reported that Gerhard stated that he should spend the rest of his life in prison due to the crimes he committed.
Last month, Gore was found guilty of the 2022 rape and murder of 13-year-old Milana Li in Beaverton, Oregon. It is alleged that he enticed the girl into a wooded area, assaulted her, and left her body in a creek.
He was sentenced on Monday.
At the time of the crime, he was 16 years old, but he was deemed fit to be tried as an adult due to the seriousness of his offenses.
