One Dallas police officer was killed and two others were injured in a shooting, prompting the department to mourn the loss of "one of our own."
Investigators say that an individual who was suspected of a crime in Dallas was killed by responding officers after brandishing a long gun.
The Dallas Police Department is "grieving" Friday after one of its officers was killed and two others were injured by a suspect who later died in a shootout with police following a chase.
According to investigators, the incident occurred at approximately 10 p.m. on Thursday in the 900 block of East Ledbetter Drive when Dallas Police officers responded to an officer in distress. Upon arrival, they discovered an officer who had been "shot in a marked squad car" and engaged in "gunfire with a suspect at the scene." As a result, two other officers were also injured.
"Dallas Police pursued a suspect who sped away from the scene, resulting in a shooting that ended in the 1000 block of Stemmons Freeway. The preliminary investigation revealed that the suspect was armed with a long gun and died at the scene."
At an early morning news conference on Friday, Dallas Police spokesperson Kristin Lowman stated that "our department is in pain" and "we have officers who are injured and are currently in the hospital." Additionally, she announced that the department had suffered a tragic loss.
She stated, "We request thoughts and prayers from our city tonight and this morning for those recovering in the hospital, our fallen, their families, and loved ones, as well as for our department."
The suspect's motive is unclear and the names of those involved have not been released.
One of the injured officers is in critical condition, while the other is in stable condition, according to Dallas Police.
This morning, Police Chief Eddie Garcia wrote on X that he was "speechless."
The department announced on Friday that flags at all city facilities will be flown at half-staff, and an investigation is ongoing.
KDFW reported that numerous police officers were present outside the Methodist Dallas Medical Center throughout the night, where the fallen officer had been transported.
The officer was later transported to the Dallas County Medical Examiner's Office in a procession that took place around 4 a.m., according to the station.
