On the seventh test flight, the upper stage of the Starship spacecraft disappeared, and debris was observed falling from the sky.
The 'chopsticks' successfully caught part of the rocket.
SpaceX's Starship Super Heavy booster experienced a "rapid unscheduled disassembly," resulting in rocket debris being spotted in the sky. However, part of the device successfully returned to its "chopsticks" for a second time.
SpaceX's Starbase test site in Boca Chica, Texas saw the vehicle lift off, and about two minutes and 45 seconds later, the booster separated and returned towards the site, as reported by Space News.
One by one, the six engines of the spacecraft seemed to shut down, resulting in contact loss just 8 minutes and 30 seconds into the flight, according to SpaceX.
"During its ascent burn, Starship underwent an unexpected disassembly, prompting SpaceX to launch an investigation. The company stated that teams will analyze the data from the flight test to determine the root cause. Success in this test comes from the lessons learned, and today's flight will help improve Starship's reliability."
It was the seventh test flight for the powerful rocket.
The spacecraft was intended to travel across the Gulf of Mexico from Texas on a near-circumference of the world, similar to previous test flights. It contained 10 dummy satellites for training in releasing them. This was the maiden voyage of the upgraded spacecraft.
"Obviously, we are bummed out about ship, but it was great to see a booster come down," said SpaceX spokesman Dan Huot.
The spacecraft's last recorded altitude was 90 miles, with a velocity of 13,245 mph.
Before moving on to other satellites and eventually crews, Elon Musk plans to launch actual Starlinks on Starships from Boca Chica, near the Mexican border.
People on the ground were baffled by the video footage of debris falling from the sky.
One video posted online prompted Musk to write on X, stating that while success is uncertain, entertainment is guaranteed.
He stated that "improved versions of the ship and booster are currently ready for launch."
