A massive pipeline fire in suburban Houston on Monday caused grass fires and burned power poles, forcing evacuations and emitting a giant plume of smoke into the sky.
In La Porte, approximately 25 miles southwest of Houston, the fire started at 9:55 a.m.
Nearby businesses, including a Walmart, were also affected by the fire as shown in video images from KTRK-TV.
La Porte city spokesperson Lee Woodward announced in an email that officials have instructed Brookglen neighborhood residents near the fire to evacuate.
Woodward advised avoiding the area and following law enforcement instructions. Additional information will be shared as soon as possible.
The cause of the fire was not immediately known.
Nearly 1,600 customers in Harris County are without power due to several power lines being near the fire, according to PowerOutage.us.
