Officials reported that two Americans from California were found dead in a pickup truck in Mexico after being shot.

On Wednesday night, Gloria Ambriz, 50, and Rafael Cardona, 53, were found by authorities while responding to a report of a shooting in Angamacutiro, a western state in Mexico, according to KTTV, citing the state attorney general's office.

While on vacation to visit family, a black 2016 Ford Platinum pickup truck carrying a couple was targeted by gunmen near an intersection.

Officials announced that Ambriz died on the spot, while Cardona passed away in the hospital in Puruándiro after being transported there.

The deaths of the two Californian tourists in Mexico increase safety worries.

The U.S. State Department advises against traveling to Michoacán in Mexico.

"In Mexico, violent crimes such as homicide, kidnapping, carjacking, and robbery are widespread and common. The U.S. government has limited ability to provide emergency services to U.S. citizens in many areas of Mexico due to travel restrictions and prohibitions on U.S. government employees. Additionally, local emergency services are often limited outside of state capitals or major cities in many states."

Planet Chronicle Digital has reached out to the U.S. State Department for comment.
