New allegations against Ryan Routh, the suspect in the attempted assassination of President Trump.
A new attempted felony murder charge has been filed against Ryan Routh in Florida.
Florida Attorney General Ashley Moody announced on Wednesday that Ryan Routh, the man accused of attempting to assassinate then-presidential candidate Donald Trump at a Florida golf course in September, is facing a new charge of attempted felony murder related to a car crash that occurred as he tried to evade authorities.
As Routh fled north on I-95, law enforcement had to shut down traffic in both directions to capture him and ensure public safety. Unfortunately, the lane closure caused a traffic crash that injured a 6-year-old girl traveling with her family.
Authorities in Florida are frustrated with a lack of cooperation and support from federal agents, leading to new charges against Routh.
"As soon as we began reaching out to our federal partners, we were met with a lack of cooperation, including refusal to grant us access to the crime scene, evidence, and witness interviews."
On Sept. 15, Routh was reportedly positioned in the brush near the Trump International Golf Club in West Palm Beach for over 12 hours with a rifle, waiting for Trump to arrive. A Secret Service agent spotted Routh pointing a rifle through a fence and fired at him. Routh escaped and was apprehended that day.
Already, Routh has pleaded not guilty to five counts, including the attempted assassination of a presidential candidate and assault on a federal officer.
An insanity defense is being considered by Routh's legal team following his last appearance in federal court on Dec. 11.
Gov. Ron DeSantis of Florida concurred with Moody's statement that federal officials have been challenging to collaborate with regarding the issue.
"The federal government has obstructed Florida's investigation of the Trump assassination attempt at every turn, and I commend AG Ashley Moody and her team for persisting in the face of such resistance. On January 20th, the tide will turn and we anticipate that the federal roadblocks will be lifted. The would-be assassin must face the full weight of justice, and the public has a right to know about the defendant's background, motivations, and plan."
Routh is still in federal custody and his trial is set for Feb. 10, 2025.
