Near the southern border in California, a U.S. Customs and Border Protection pilot died in a Monday helicopter crash, according to authorities.
A Eurocopter AS35 helicopter crashed at approximately 10:15 a.m. in a private field near Potrero, east of San Diego, according to the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA).
An aviation mishap occurred while a CBP Air and Marine Operations aircraft was on a border security mission, a CBP spokesperson informed Planet Chronicle Digital.
A CBP Air Interdiction Agent, who was the pilot and sole occupant of the aircraft, tragically passed away at the scene, according to a statement from the spokesperson.
The pilot was not identified.
"The FAA stated that only the pilot was on board, and the NTSB will investigate the incident. The NTSB will lead the investigation and provide updates."
This year, San Diego County has experienced two helicopter crashes, as reported by Fox 5 on Monday.
In February, a crash resulted in the death of five U.S. Marines, prompting a massive foot search in the area during heavy rain and snow, according to news reports.
