McConnell AFB air show canceled due to storm, US service members injured.
On Sunday, McConnell Air Force Base experienced a slow-moving, wet microburst.
On Sunday, six people, including U.S. service members and civilians, were injured at McConnell Air Force Base due to a storm that canceled a planned airshow, which was expected to attract thousands of spectators.
At McConnell Air Force Base in Wichita, Kansas, 10 individuals sustained minor injuries during a slow-moving wet microburst that caused heavy winds, lightning, and rain.
According to John Van Winkle, a base spokesperson, six of the injured were military or medical personnel, while four were civilian vendors, as stated in a Planet Chronicle Digital report.
Each received "minor injuries," he said.
Van Winkle stated that an airman and a civilian male were injured and taken to a nearby hospital with minor wounds. They were all outside on the flight line when the damaging winds hit, he added.
The inclement weather had not yet allowed spectators to enter the event area.
The McConnell Frontiers in Flight Airshow on Sunday was cancelled due to storm concerns. McConnell stated that a slow-moving wet microburst had been present over the base in the morning. This microburst resulted in wind gusts of up to 54 mph on the McConnell flight line.
"Due to the damage to services, McConnell base was unable to execute a safe airshow and had to cancel it," Van Winkle stated. "At McConnell, safety is always our top priority, especially when hosting the community for an airshow."
At least one injury was sustained during the airshow due to significant wind damage, according to Kansas State Trooper Joe Owen.
Due to the incident, the Airshow has been cancelled for today. Be cautious, everyone! Owen shared a photo of an overturned airplane on Facebook.
Saturday’s portion of the air show brought more than 65,000 visitors.
