Luigi Mangione, the CEO of UnitedHealthcare and a murder suspect, is now facing extradition to New York after ending his fight.
On Thursday, the Pennsylvania court will hear additional arguments concerning the potential extradition of Mangione to New York.
Luigi Mangione, the suspect charged with murdering UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson on December 4th in Manhattan, will appear in court on Thursday for two hearings in Pennsylvania, including an extradition proceeding.
In New York, officials are working to extradite Mangione, 26, who is currently incarcerated in a Pennsylvania prison on other charges and faces murder charges.
On Thursday at 8:30 a.m., the Blar County Court will hold an extradition hearing for Mangione and a preliminary hearing for his firearms and fraudulent ID-related charges in Pennsylvania.
Mangione, a New York resident, is accused of plotting to murder Thompson, a Minnesota resident who was in town for UnitedHealthcare's annual shareholder conference. Mangione allegedly used a 3D-printed ghost gun and suppressor to shoot Thompson from behind.
On Tuesday, Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg announced that a grand jury indicted Mangione on charges of first-degree murder in furtherance of terrorism, two counts of second-degree murder, two counts of second-degree criminal weapons possession, four counts of third-degree criminal weapons possession, one count of fourth-degree criminal weapons possession, and one count of second-degree criminal possession of a forged instrument.
Within an hour of the crime, Mangione left New York City and went to Altoona, Pennsylvania, according to prosecutors.
On Dec. 9, five days after the initial arrest, Altoona police apprehended Mangione in a McDonald's. A tip from an employee led to the arrest. The suspect presented a fake ID and seemed to become anxious when asked about recent travel to New York.
The suspect traveled from New York City to Pittsburgh via bus, then continued on to Altoona, a rust-belt town situated between Pittsburgh and Harrisburg.
A handwritten manifesto criticizing the health care industry, including UnitedHealthcare, was discovered by officials, as previously stated by NYPD Chief of Detectives Joseph Kenny to Planet Chronicle.
The suspect's grievances with the health care insurance industry are believed to be the motive behind their actions, although officials have not confirmed this.
The suspect, who is 26 years old and originally from Maryland, has recently resided in California and Hawaii. Mangione graduated valedictorian from the Gilman School, a private, all-boys high school in Baltimore, in 2016. He later obtained his bachelor's and master's degrees in computer science from the University of Pennsylvania in 2020.
On Dec. 10, the day following his arrest in Altoona, Mangione declared that he would not waive extradition.
Thomas Dickey, Magione's attorney, stated outside the Blair County Courthouse on Dec. 10 that they did not waive extradition and are contesting it. They will fight this within the rules and with the constitutional protections that their client has.
On Tuesday, sources informed Planet Chronicle that Mangione intends to relinquish his struggle and surrender extradition, paving the way for his return to New York City.
Manhattan officials are working to bring Mangione back to New York.
"New York Gov. Kathy Hochul has written that the state is prepared to take any necessary steps to hold the killer accountable for the murder of Brian Thompson, now that DA Bragg has filed an indictment. If the defendant chooses not to waive his extradition rights, Hochul is ready to request a governor's warrant to ensure he is held and tried in New York."
