LAPD confiscates $4M worth of fentanyl, enough to potentially eliminate entire population of Los Angeles.
Over the past decade, the illicit use of fentanyl, a drug used to aid trauma patients in hospitals, has surged.
This week, the Los Angeles police department conducted a significant drug raid, confiscating enough fentanyl to potentially end the lives of every city resident.
A bust occurred during a narcotics investigation in downtown Los Angeles, which involved several LAPD divisions.
Jose Alberto Soto, a 28-year-old man, was arrested by the LAPD for the sale of fentanyl, a highly dangerous synthetic opioid.
A search warrant was executed by police in the 7500 block of Central Avenue in South Los Angeles, resulting in the discovery of over 50 pounds of fentanyl and nearly nine pounds of black tar heroin, as well as $14,500 in U.S. currency.
The DEA estimates that the amount of fentanyl seized this week is worth around $4 million in street value. Authorities say that just 2 mg of fentanyl can be fatal. Therefore, the amount of fentanyl seized this week could potentially kill more than 11 million people, which is nearly three times the population of Los Angeles.
Soto is still in custody without bail, and it is unclear if he has hired a lawyer to represent him.
While fentanyl is a potent synthetic opioid used in hospitals to treat trauma victims, its illicit use has surged in the past decade.
Nearly 75,000 people died from fentanyl overdoses last year, with more than 150 people dying daily from overdoses related to synthetic opioids.
