Judge criticizes man who shot rookie NYPD cop, saying he showed no regard for the officer's life.
Devin Spraggins is sentenced by Judge Kenneth Holder in a pro-police speech.
On Monday, a judge condemned the gunman who harmed an NYPD officer and imposed a lengthy prison term.
In April 2023, Devin Spraggins, 24, was found guilty of attempted murder after shooting at an officer on a city bus. The incident occurred while Spraggins was engaged in a dispute with a bus passenger, resulting in Officer Brett Boller being injured.
On Monday, Judge Kenneth Holder sentenced Spraggins to 39 years to life in prison, while the gunman remained silent. The New York Post reported that the judge also censured Spraggins during the sentencing.
"According to the Post, Holder stated that the defining moment in the case was not when you shot Police Officer Boller in the leg, but when, unaware that the magazine had fallen out of the gun, you aimed it at him and pulled the trigger while he was on the ground in agony."
"You effectively tried to execute him," the judge added.
Spraggins was informed by Holder that Boller and other NYPD officers work tirelessly to safeguard all New York residents, including criminals.
"The judge remarked, "The irony is that on any other day, Police Officer Boller and Police Officer Rock would have put their lives on the line to save any of your four sisters, your brother, or even you.""
"You didn't care about his life, and you attempted to take it."
In less than a year as an officer, Boller was shot in the right hip by Spraggins, who then fled the scene in a Lyft. Boller was later taken to a hospital in stable condition.
Officials in New York stated that the shooting occurred when Spraggins displayed hostile behavior towards another individual on the bus.
"The bus driver flags down the NYPD officers after seeing them on the street, and the incident then unfolds."
