JonBenet Ramsey's father speculates on the motive of his daughter's killer in a resurfaced interview.
In 2000, John and Patsy Ramsey discussed their daughter's 1996 murder with Barbara Walters.
A previously unseen interview with JonBenet Ramsey's parents and Barbara Walters has been released following the release of a new documentary about the 6-year-old pageant star's 1996 murder.
The case of JonBenet Ramsey's murder in Boulder, Colorado, 28 years ago, remains unsolved, despite ongoing public interest and John Ramsey's recent push to re-test crime scene evidence for DNA using new technology.
In the interview conducted in 2000, Walters stated that the ransom note contained an odd figure of $118,000, which was a bonus that he had received.
"John Ramsey stated to Walters that one of the theories he had was that the number 18 was significant to the killer, as it was close to the total bonus amount he received that year. However, the exact connection between the number and the bonus or something else only the killer knows, and it is unknown to them."
In 2006, six years after the interview, Patsy Ramsey, who later passed away, informed Walters that she was unaware of the amount of her husband's bonus when asked.
The Netflix documentary "Cold Case: Who Killed JonBenet Ramsey" brought back the interview.
In September, John Ramsey, 80, expressed optimism about new leadership at the Boulder Police Department (BPD) after the department officially named a new police chief on Sept. 6.
Since 1996, BPD has had five police chiefs who have taken on the investigation of the JonBenet Ramsey case, including Chief Stephen Redfearn, who served as interim chief starting in January.
Planet Chronicle Digital reported that Ramsey requested BPD to share evidence from his daughter's 30-year-old murder case with the FBI, so that federal officials can retest the evidence for possible external DNA, including male DNA, which was disclosed by federal officials in 1997.
"In 1997, the police obtained an unidentified male DNA sample, which they kept secret because it contradicted their conclusion that we were guilty. However, Ramsey explained that by today's standards, the testing they did in 1997 was primitive."
The garrote found around JonBenet's neck, the ransom note found in the Ramsey house, the suitcase found in the basement, the unknown flashlight found on the kitchen counter, and the unknown rope found in Burke Ramsey's room are all pieces of evidence that have never been tested for traces of DNA, according to public records obtained by journalist Paula Woodward, as Planet Chronicle Digital previously reported.

In 1999, a grand jury indicted John and his wife, Patsy Ramsey, for child abuse resulting in JonBenet's death. However, Alex Hunter, the district attorney at the time, refused to sign the indictment, citing a lack of evidence that would warrant criminal charges against the parents. Despite this, prosecutors eventually dropped their case against John and Patsy in 2006.
The Ramsey family continues to have conversations with Chief Redfearn, and there are no plans to alter this arrangement, as stated by BPD in a September statement.
