Officials announced on Monday that U.S. and coalition forces carried out airstrikes in Iraq over the past week, resulting in the killing of Islamic State fighters concealed in a cave and the capture of a cell leader in Syria.
From Dec. 30 to Monday, ISIS locations in the Hamrin mountains of northeast Iraq were targeted by strikes, according to U.S. Central Command.
Gen. Michael Erik Kurilla, CENTCOM Commander, stated that partnered operations are crucial in keeping pressure on ISIS and preventing the terrorist group from exploiting the evolving security landscape in the region.
The defeat of ISIS is a global effort that requires the cooperation of our Coalition, allies, and partners. U.S. Central Command is committed to aggressively pursuing these terrorists who pose a threat to the region, our allies, and our citizens.
The strikes were carried out to hinder the terrorist organization from planning and executing attacks against civilians, including Americans and their allies in the region, as stated by CENTCOM.
ISIS fighters clashed with Coalition forces during operations, prompting the use of Coalition air strikes, according to CENTCOM.
Officials stated that at one point, jets were utilized to eliminate ISIS militants concealed in a cave.
A coalition member was killed and two others from different nations were wounded. No U.S. personnel were injured, and no damage to any U.S. equipment was reported.
On Jan. 2-3, an ISIS cell leader was captured by the U.S.-backed Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF), with assistance from CENTCOM forces, near Deir ez-Zor, Syria.
