Investigators continue to probe the cause of the Las Vegas Cybertruck explosion.
An Army soldier and Trump supporter, Matthew Livelsberger served in the U.S. Army.
The cause of the U.S. Army soldier's decision to rent a Tesla Cybertruck and drive it to the Trump International Hotel in Las Vegas, where he shot himself in the head and caused an explosion on New Year's Day, remains unknown.
The Las Vegas Sheriff, Kevin McMahill, has named 37-year-old Matthew Livelsberger of Colorado Springs, Colorado as a person of interest in the case. However, he clarified that he cannot say with absolute certainty that Livelsberger is a suspect until DNA evidence from the Cybertruck matches the remains of the body.
The bulletproof truck stopped at the hotel valet entrance at 8:40 a.m. and exploded seventeen seconds later, causing fireworks to shoot out.
The sheriff noted that the explosion did not harm the truck's body, except for the glass and bed cover, in addition to the camping fuel and gasoline it contained, as McMahill stated.
Though seven bystanders sustained minor injuries, the hotel's glass doors were not damaged, as he stated.
McMahill stated that the subject's body was unrecognizable due to burns, but he also sustained a gunshot wound to the head before the explosion. Additionally, one of the handguns was discovered near the subject's feet inside the vehicle.
McMahill did not claim that Livelsberger was on a suicide mission, but he did describe it as a "suicide with a bombing that occurred immediately thereafter."
On Thursday, FBI agents searched Livelsberger's home in Colorado Springs to gather evidence about his motive for going to Las Vegas.
"FBI Special Agent in Charge Spencer Evans stated during a press conference on Thursday that they are aware of the bombing and that it has factors that raise concerns. However, they do not have any information at this time that confirms the specific ideology or reasoning behind it. The bombing occurred in front of the Trump building and involved a Tesla vehicle."
According to a U.S. official, Livelsberger, who had recently returned from an overseas assignment in Germany, died on approved leave, as reported by the Associated Press.
An anonymous law enforcement official informed the wire that investigators discovered through interviews that Livelsberger may have had a dispute with his wife over relationship problems prior to renting the Tesla and purchasing the handguns found in the truck. The official spoke to the AP on the condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to discuss the ongoing investigation.
Sara Livelsberger, a 38-year-old living in Delray Beach, Florida, was once married to Livelsberger, who divorced in 2018 and remarried in 2022.
In 2016, Sara, in her Facebook posts, stated that she was a registered Democrat and shared images that were critical of President-elect Trump.
Although Livelsberger resides in Colorado, he has connections in Ohio.
In September 2011, Livelsberger was given a speeding ticket in Franklin County, Ohio, for driving 70 mph in a 65-mph zone, according to a report by The Columbus Dispatch.
According to property records obtained by The Columbus Dispatch, Livelsberger owns property in Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio, in addition to having a reported Westerville address.
After graduating from Bucyrus High School in Ohio, where he played baseball and football, Livelsberger reportedly got injured while playing football. As a result, he enlisted in the U.S. Army and worked with the Special Forces as a communications officer.
Dean Livelsberger, his uncle, told The Independent that his nephew was a "100% patriot" and resembled a "Rambo-type."
According to The Independent, Dean stated that his nephew's Facebook posts were patriotic and he was a fan of President-elect Trump.
Dean reportedly spoke to the publication about his nephew's skills with explosives.
"Matt was a highly skilled warrior who could have created a more advanced explosive if he had the opportunity, according to reports. He was known as a "supersoldier" due to his impressive military training and experience. Despite his abilities, some of the things he was awarded and experienced don't make sense, suggesting that he could have done even more with his skills."
Dean stated that Livelsberger had the ability to create a bomb capable of destroying half of the hotel if he intended to harm others.
Livelsberger, a Green Beret operations sergeant, spent most of his time at Fort Carson, Colorado, and in Germany, where he was serving with a special forces group. McMahill stated that Livelsberger was granted leave from Germany to serve in the National Guard and Army Reserve.
He also received several awards and honors while serving in the U.S. Army.
The U.S. Army Public Affairs informed Planet Chronicle that Livelsberger has received several medals and badges for his service, including the Bronze Star Medal with Valor, four Meritorious Service Medals, three Army Commendation Medals with Valor, two Army Achievement Medals, five Army Good Conduct Medals, the National Defense Service Medal, three Afghanistan Campaign Medals with campaign stars, two Global War on Terrorism Expeditionary Medals, two Global War on Terrorism Service Medals, three Noncommissioned Officer Professional Development Ribbons, the Army Service Ribbon, the Overseas Service Ribbon, two NATO Medals, the Special Forces Tab, the Combat Infantryman Badge, the Parachutist Badge, and the Freefall Badge.
