A law enforcement expert discussed the focus of Georgia agencies as they investigate the Apalachee High School shooting.

Georgia's top law enforcement agencies are investigating Colt Gray's motivation while also working on preventing future mass shootings in the community, according to Matthew Fagiana, a retired police sergeant and law enforcement consultant.

At the high school, 2 teachers and 2 students were killed by the suspected shooter, who was 14-year-old Gray.

1. What is the history of the suspect?

Law enforcement is concentrating on the 14-year-old's past and any known interactions with the victims, as stated by Fagiana.

"The suspect's past will be thoroughly investigated, including their interactions with victims, any indications of violent behavior, statements or social media posts that could help develop a motive, and recent internet history."

2. What was the suspect's pathway to the school?

The expert predicted that investigative teams would likely conduct a thorough search of Gray's home and the high school.

""Assuming the crime scene at the school is large, it would require a meticulous examination and collection of evidence, such as logging locations of evidence and spent casings," he said."

Law enforcement is likely to reconstruct the scene to trace the shooter's path through the school, as stated by Fagiana.

He stated that they would reconstruct the scene and accurately depict the suspect's entry and path during the shooting.

3. What prompted the mass shooting?

Investigators are trying to determine what caused the suspected gunman to start shooting, according to Fagiana.

"The suspect's interviews with investigators will be a crucial piece of evidence in the investigation," he stated. "When someone commits a mass killing, one of the most important questions we try to answer is the 'why.'"

He stated that since many school shooters either take their own lives or are killed by law enforcement to prevent further harm, we are often left without a clear motive and can only speculate based on their past and any evidence they leave behind.

The GBI announced on Thursday that Colin Gray, the father of the 14-year-old suspect, was arrested and charged with second-degree murder.

Gray, a 54-year-old man, was charged with two counts of second-degree murder, four counts of involuntary manslaughter, and eight counts of cruelty to children, according to the GBI.

4. What will mitigate risk to prevent future mass shootings?

Law enforcement and agencies are considering what steps will help mitigate future mass shootings, as stated by Fagiana.

"When a suspect is arrested, law enforcement and experts aim to utilize his statements and evaluations as an opportunity to reduce the likelihood of similar events occurring in the future, according to him. Most individuals concur that individuals who perpetrate such crimes possess a psychological difference from the majority of us, who would never contemplate committing such actions."

5. How can law enforcement support the local community?

Fagiana emphasized the importance of providing comfort and support to residents in Winder, Georgia who experienced devastating loss.

"He emphasized the importance of supporting the families of the victims, who are going through a difficult time and require answers. Law enforcement will continue to prioritize their needs in the coming days."
