Investigations ongoing after SUV destroyed in Hawaii and explosive devices were found.
Maui police and the FBI have retrieved several improvised explosive devices.
The FBI and Maui police are requesting the public to report any suspicious activity following the explosion caused by improvised explosive devices (IEDs) last week and the subsequent recovery of several others.
On Aug. 8, an explosion occurred on Old Haleakala Highway, as stated in an FBI press release. The 7-inch by 4-inch cylinder shaped IED was placed in a trash receptacle and detonated, injuring the driver and sending them to the hospital.
"According to Jessica Weatherholt, who spoke to local station KITV, she observed a flash in the sky and believed it would be lightning. She also stated that she heard the loudest explosion she had ever heard in her life, which sounded like an attack and someone dropping bombs."
"The driver's side window was shattered and the frame was bent," she continued, describing the condition of the white SUV that was struck by the device. "The entire body was filled with holes and shrapnel."
Authorities have collected several IEDs from trash receptacles and other areas outside of plain view along roadways between Kahului and Kula. These devices vary in shape and size but have been rendered safe.
"The FBI and MPD are urging the public to report any suspicious activity that could pose a threat to public safety, such as someone leaving an object unattended in a public space. If you see a suspicious or unknown object, especially near any street or road, do not touch, drive over, or go near it for any reason. If possible, keep others away from the area and call 911 immediately."
The FBI stated that IEDs can resemble small, homemade baskets and a forensic review is being conducted to determine their configuration for detonation.
The FBI and MPD are collaborating in the search for those responsible for the explosion that hit an SUV. According to investigators, the driver of the SUV, who was involved in the accident, has been discharged from the hospital.
""If we had left 10 or 15 minutes earlier to pick up our daughter from work, we would have been at the same location as the woman in the white SUV," Weatherholt stated about the victims."
