In droves, sea lions were caught on camera taking over a popular California beach, prompting its indefinite closure to the public.
For approximately a month, mammals gather on Monterey's beaches, as stated by the city.
Sea lions have overtaken one California beach with no signs of slowing down.
Due to an overwhelming influx of marine mammals, San Carlos Beach in Monterey has been indefinitely closed to the public.
"The City Parks Division and Monterey Bay National Marine Sanctuary staff have been collaborating to monitor the situation, according to Laurie Huelga, the communications manager of the City of Monterey, who stated in an email to Planet Chronicle Digital that this behavior is typical."
Every August, sea lions gather in large groups in the city situated on the state's central coast, typically congregating near Fisherman's Wharf rather than San Carlos Beach.
The mammals from the Channel Islands off the coast of Santa Barbara recently had their pupping season and are now visiting the sea lions.
The city was informed by the Monterey Bay National Marine Sanctuary that the sea lions are "chasing the food," and there are greater fishing opportunities in the cooler inshore waters.
"After resting and eating, the sea lions will return to the Channel Islands. While most are males, a few are females. The pups are still in the area," Huelga stated.
"Huelga stated that we will reopen the beach once they depart, as they have been present for more than two weeks and typically stay for a month in total."
The city humorously stated on Instagram that they have been asked about the reopening of San Carlos Beach and sought the opinion of sea lions.
The Monterey Bay National Marine Sanctuary declined to provide a comment to Planet Chronicle Digital.
