On the second day of the Democratic National Convention in Chicago, the police recorded five shootings that resulted in 12 victims, one of whom died, and one aggravated battery incident.
Over the weekend leading up to the DNC in downtown Chicago, there were 26 shooting incidents resulting in 30 victims, with five fatalities, compared to eight shootings on Monday, four of which were fatal.
"The Chicago Police Department Superintendent, Larry Snelling, stated during a Monday press conference that officers are visible and protecting the entire city, including areas around the Democratic National Convention and neighborhoods with the most vulnerable residents."
At 5:14 p.m. on Tuesday in the Auburn Park area, three people were shot, as per CPD.
An unresponsive 19-year-old male victim was discovered lying on the ground after officers responded to reports of shots fired. Three men were shot and wounded in the incident, including the 19-year-old who was shot in the head and remains in critical condition. The second and third victims, a 20-year-old male and 18-year-old male, sustained gunshot wounds to the leg and torso, respectively, and remain in good condition. Witnesses reported seeing a light-colored Dodge Charger driving away from the scene.
At approximately 6:30 p.m. in Groveland Park, a 26-year-old male victim was approached by an offender who brandished a handgun. The victim, who was a concealed carry license holder, also drew his handgun and the two exchanged fire. The offender shot the victim twice in the leg, and authorities transported him to a nearby hospital. The offender also sustained a gunshot wound to the leg and is currently hospitalized in critical condition.
In the Back of the Yards neighborhood of Chicago, six men were injured in a shooting that occurred around 7 p.m.
The six victims, all men aged between 39 and 51, were found with gunshot wounds after officers responded to reports of shots fired. A witness reported seeing two unidentified individuals firing gunshots at five victims standing outside on S. Ashland Ave. before fleeing. The sixth victim was driving when he was hit by gunfire.
A man, 46 years old, died from a gunshot wound to his left torso.
At approximately 9 p.m., a 32-year-old man was present in an unknown residence with multiple individuals when gunfire erupted, resulting in a gunshot wound for him. Despite this, he is currently in stable condition at the hospital.
A 44-year-old man and an unknown offender had a verbal dispute on the 6500 block of S. Artesian at 10:13 p.m. The offender drew a gun and fired before fleeing the scene. The victim sustained a graze wound to the right arm and is in good condition.
On Tuesday, a man barricaded himself inside a restaurant on the 2300 block of W. Madison Ave. around 4 p.m. and the incident lasted approximately 14 hours until authorities took him into custody at 7:19 a.m.
