Eight Tajikistan nationals entered the U.S. illegally through the southern border, and no derogatory information was initially flagged during processing by U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) or the U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS).
According to a federal source, the suspected terrorists were "thoroughly screened" and no red flags were raised, as reported by Planet Chronicle.
After the release of suspected terrorists into the U.S., derogatory information about their ties to ISIS was flagged with national security concerns.
The New York Post's Jennie Taer first reported on the sting operation.
Taer's report disclosed that a wiretap was part of the investigation and one of the arrested individuals was discussing bombs.
One source informed The Post that they are concerned about a potential repeat or even a more severe incident occurring at the Boston marathon.
The FBI and ICE issued a joint statement when contacted about the report by Planet Chronicle.
"Over the last few days, ICE agents arrested several non-citizens pursuant to immigration authorities. The actions were carried out in close coordination with the FBI’s Joint Terrorism Task Forces. The individuals arrested are detained in ICE custody pending removal proceedings. As the FBI and DHS have recently described in public and partner bulletins, the U.S. has been in a heightened threat environment.
