ICE: 22-year-old killed in hit-and-run caused by illegal immigrant DUI collision
Police were alerted to the location of a suspect involved in a fatal crash by witnesses who followed him to a Walgreens and held him there until authorities arrived.
ICE confirmed that the suspect in a deadly DUI hit-and-run in New Mexico, which resulted in the death of a 22-year-old, entered the U.S. illegally.
On Monday morning, Jesus Sandoval-Martinez, a 21-year-old man, was arrested and charged with two counts of vehicular homicide, reckless driving, and leaving an accident resulting in great bodily harm or death, according to ICE's confirmation to Planet Chronicle.
Overnight Monday in Albuquerque, a Dodge pickup truck driven by Sandoval-Martinez allegedly collided with a Tesla and a Toyota Corolla at an intersection while Sandoval-Martinez was drunk.
The 21-year-old migrant, who was allegedly involved in a fatal crash, reportedly fled on foot and appeared visibly impaired, with slurred speech.
He was pursued by witnesses and onlookers to a Walgreens and kept there until police arrived.
Tiger Gutierrez, a 22-year-old driver of a Tesla, was killed after running a red light and colliding with a migrant. Law enforcement confirmed the incident.
Authorities said Gutierrez died, and a passenger was hospitalized.
The driver of the Toyota was treated for minor injuries, ICE said.
After establishing probable cause to remove him from the U.S., ICE filed an immigration detainer against Sandoval-Martinez following his arrest.
The migrant's deadly crash was the first time ICE had any contact with them.
A source confirmed to Planet Chronicle that he is a Mexican national without a Social Security number and a valid driver's license.
In June 2024, approximately 84,000 migrants who entered the U.S. without permission were processed by U.S. Customs and Border Patrol.
In FY 2024, Border Patrol agents apprehended 13,231 "criminal noncitizens" who attempted to enter the U.S., a significant increase from the 4,269 apprehensions in FY 2019.
Crimes allegedly committed by illegal migrants are on the rise.

In Houston, two Venezuelan migrants, Johan Jose Martinez-Rangel, 22, and Franklin Jose Peña Ramos, 26, are charged with the murder of 12-year-old Jocelyn Nungaray.
