Hundreds of National Guard members are dispatched to NYC subway system by Hochul.
The deployment of 750 soldiers has a psychological impact, according to the NY governor.
This holiday season, hundreds of National Guard members have been deployed to secure the New York City subway system, as announced by New York Gov. Kathy Hochul on Wednesday.
On Tuesday, Hochul announced that 750 National Guard members and 250 MTA Police officers were recently deployed to secure New York City train stations.
"According to Hochul, the presence of the National Guard has not only created a physical difference but also a psychological difference in how people feel about safety. When individuals see someone in uniform, including National Guard members, they feel more secure."
In March, Hochul presented her five-point subway safety plan, which involved deploying 750 National Guard members to assist the NYPD with bag searches at busy train stations.
"I knew we had to stabilize quickly when I saw a spike in crime," Hochul said. "Many people doubted it would make a difference, but I'm proud of the officers here with me today."
During a press conference on Wednesday, Hochul announced a decrease in subway crime. In March, she predicted that her plans would create a "deterrent effect."
"Hochul stated that bringing a gun or knife on the subway would create a deterrent effect for those considering it. They might think twice about it because they listened to the mayor and governor, who have more people checking their bags."
In New York City, there are 58,000 illegal migrants who have been convicted of or are facing criminal charges, according to a report from Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) released in December.
The report stated that out of the 58,626 criminal migrants, 1,153 were "suspected or known gang members."
The move to add National Guard members to the subways was previously criticized by Emily Compagno on "Outnumbered," who deemed it "too little, too late."
"The "Outnumbered" co-host argued that if safety was truly a priority for her, then why couldn't she go back and implement and enforce those policies earlier? Why didn't she remove him from office? Now, we have to put National Guardsmen in place."
