Gov. Phil Murphy of New Jersey requests federal assistance due to 'complex' drone sightings: 'We require additional support'
The drones are 'very sophisticated', according to Murphy.
On Monday, New Jersey Gov. Phil Murphy stated that residents are rightfully "frustrated" with the ongoing absence of information regarding the enigmatic drone sightings occurring throughout the state.
Planet Chronicle Digital reported that Murphy stated that both state and federal authorities have not found any evidence to suggest that the drones are a threat to public safety. Despite this, he admitted that he lacks information about the drones' identity and purpose.
""Most importantly, we don't see any concern to public safety," Murphy said, including Homeland Security, FBI, Secret Service, and state police."
Although we had 49 sightings last night, some reports may have been mistaken or overlapping, which makes it frustrating that we don't have more answers about their origin and motives.
Yesterday, I was in constant contact with the White House and Homeland Security leadership, discussing important matters at the highest level throughout the day. I hope we receive answers soon. I urge everyone to report any suspicious activity to the FBI or their local law enforcement immediately.
According to Murphy, the drones are "very sophisticated" and tend to "go dark" when they are detected.
Authorities are most concerned about protecting sensitive targets and critical infrastructure, as the state has both utility and military assets. Additionally, President-elect Trump owns a home in New Jersey.
"We're taking this seriously and need more cooperation from the feds, as I previously stated," said Murphy.
Drones have been reportedly sighted in Morris County, New Jersey, in mid-November and have since been observed frequently throughout the Garden State, with a recent increase in Middlesex County and other regions.
The FBI, NJ State Police, and NJ Office of Homeland Security and Preparedness are requesting the public to provide any information regarding recent sightings of possible drones flying in several areas along the Raritan River, as stated in a Dec. 3 FBI press release.
"Several weeks ago, law enforcement and public reports have been received regarding a cluster of what appear to be drones and a fixed wing aircraft."
In certain regions, drones have been observed flying in groups during the night.
Drone sightings were also recently reported on Staten Island in New York.
