Georgia school shooting: Authorities disclose details on suspect's weapon entry into school
Allegedly, Colt Gray carried a gun into Apalachee High School concealed in a backpack.
Last week, a 14-year-old accused of shooting up a Georgia high school had a rifle in his backpack when he entered the school, authorities stated.
On September 4, 2021, Colt Gray brought a gun to Apalachee High School in Winder, according to the Georgia Bureau of Investigation (GBI).
Despite the inability to disassemble the assault-style rifle, Gray concealed it in his backpack, according to authorities.
Barrow County Sheriff Jud Smith told WSB-TV Atlanta that it would have been noticeable, but he had some things that made it hidden.
Gray was granted permission to exit the classroom and retrieve his belongings after requesting to speak with someone in the front office.
"Smith told WSB-TV that it was not unusual for someone to ask to go up front and speak to someone at the front, and when you do that, you take your belongings with you. As a result, the teacher allowed him to leave."
Gray then went to the restroom, where he hid from teachers.
Allegedly, he took out the rifle and began shooting, killing two students and two teachers. Seven other victims sustained gunshot wounds, and two others suffered other injuries, according to police.
Richard Aspinwall, 39, Cristina Irimie, 53, and Mason Schermerhorn and Christian Angulo, both 14, were identified as victims.
Apalachee High School does not have metal detectors, GBI said.
Marcee Gray, the suspect's mother, contacted the school counselor on the day of the shooting to express her concerns about a message she had received from her son, according to an interview with ABC News.
Her son had sent her a message saying "I'm sorry, Mom," and his father had received similar texts with the same sentiment.
More charges are expected against Colt Gray, who has already been accused of four counts of felony murder.
Colin Gray, 54, is accused of allowing his son to use a weapon in an attack, resulting in two counts of second-degree murder, four counts of involuntary manslaughter, and eight counts of cruelty to children, police said.
