Georgia assistant football coach who taught 'old-school ways' among the victims of Apalachee High School shooting.
Four people, including Ricky Aspinwall, 39, were killed in a shooting at Apalachee High School in Georgia.
A coach who was one of four people killed in a high school shooting in Barrow County, Georgia, on Wednesday morning was remembered as a "leader of men" who taught the "old-school ways" of football to the children he coached.
At Apalachee High School, Ricky Aspinwall, a 39-year-old father of two young daughters, taught math and served as the football team's defensive coordinator.
The Athens Banner-Herald reported that Mike Hancock, the head football coach at the school, stated that Aspinwall was a highly respected individual in the football community and was known for being a devoted husband and father to his wife and two daughters.
"Hancock stated that he worked tirelessly, coaching old-school methods while loving the children he coached. Despite the heartbreak it brings to the kids, it is a bittersweet experience for his wife and daughters."
The alleged 14-year-old shooter killed Math teacher Christina Irimie, students Mason Shermerhorn and Christian Angulo, and wounded nine others inside the school.
A student at Apalachee High School will be charged with murder and prosecuted as an adult, according to Barrow County Sheriff Jud Smith.
When Hancock took over the Apalachee football program last year, one of his first hires was Aspinwall, who had previously coached football at Mountain View High School.
The Mountain View football program posted a tribute to Aspinwall on social media.
"We mourn the tragic loss of former MV secondary coach Ricky Aspinwall, who was killed in a senseless act at a nearby high school today. Coach A was a cherished member of MVHS football and the school’s math department. Our thoughts are with his family, including Shayna and his girls."
Coach Aspinwall was a leader of men, and a man you want to coach your kid. We love Coach A and are praying for his wife Shayna and his girls at this time.
A GoFundMe has been set up to help Aspinwell's family.
The news that Ricky Aspinwall lost his life while protecting his students has left us all in shock, as stated in a post on the fundraiser.
