Georgia airport police arrested a Southwest Airlines pilot for suspected intoxication while on duty.
Flight 3772 of Southwest Airlines, heading towards Chicago, was halted for 4 hours.
On Wednesday in Georgia, a Southwest Airlines pilot was apprehended just before takeoff, accused of arriving at work under the influence of alcohol, according to authorities.
At approximately 7 a.m. on Wednesday, David Allsop, a 52-year-old resident of New Hampshire, was arrested at Savannah/Hilton Head International Airport for driving under the influence, as stated by the Chatham County Sheriff's Office.
Southwest Flight 3772, bound for Chicago, was delayed by nearly four hours before it departed Georgia. Allsop was apprehended just before the flight.
Southwest Airlines is investigating the incident and has removed Allsop, a pilot, from duty, according to his LinkedIn profile.
"The airline stated that they are aware of a situation on Flight 3772 this morning from Savannah involving an employee who has been removed from duty."
Flight 3772 remained grounded while Southwest accommodated its passengers onto other flights.
"We prioritize the safety of our employees and customers above all else," a spokesperson stated. "As a result, customers were able to travel on other flights and we offer our sincerest apologies for any inconvenience caused."
Occasionally, a pilot is arrested or apprehended for consuming too much alcohol before a flight. In May, Japan Airlines canceled a flight from Dallas to Tokyo after it was discovered that the pilot had been drinking heavily the previous night.
Japan Airlines canceled the flight to "evaluate the captain's physical and mental condition."
Authorities are actively investigating the incident.
