Florida sheriff's deputy recovers from hospital one month after deadly 'ambush' attack: reports
A welfare check led to the death of Master Deputy Bradley Michael Link, who was shot and became trapped inside a home in the Aug. 2 shooting.
On Monday, a month following the "ambush" attack that resulted in the death of one deputy and the injury of two others, including himself, a Florida sheriff’s deputy was discharged from the hospital.
Two deputies, Deputy First Class Stefano Gargano and Master Deputy Sheriff Harold Howell, were shot while attempting to rescue Master Deputy Bradley Michael Link, who was shot and trapped inside a home in Eustis, Florida, during a welfare check request.
""Lake County Sheriff Peyton C. Grinnell stated that they were ambushed and lost one person," said the sheriff at the time."
Gargano, who was shot in the stomach and armpit "numerous" times, was in critical condition after the shooting and immediately underwent surgery. He later died of his injuries at a hospital.
Howell was shot in the shoulder and was released early last month.
According to FOX 35, Gargano underwent at least five surgeries in the last month and is expected to make a full recovery.
The Lake County Sheriff's Department has confirmed that Gargano is now at home with his family recovering, according to the station. Planet Chronicle Digital has contacted the department for further information.
Julie Sulpizio, 48, has been accused of first-degree murder, premeditated murder of a law enforcement officer, seven counts of attempted murder, felony battery/strangulation, two counts of battery and battery on a law enforcement officer in the shooting.
If found guilty, she might receive the death penalty.
Upon entering the home, the deputies were met with gunfire from Sulpizio's husband, Michael, who was waiting inside with a rifle and wearing body armor. Link was shot and became trapped inside the home, ultimately succumbing to his injuries.
A woman, later identified as Sulpizio, was accused of attacking people and trespassing on their property, hitting residents and making religious comments, accusing them of being sinners, as explained by Grinnell.
Grinnell said that in a later interview with investigators, Sulpizio admitted to trying to lure her neighbors to her home so her husband could kill them.
"She was not successful because of our deputies," he said.
The two daughters of Sulpizio and Michael, Savannah and Cheyenne, were present in the house, and one of them shouted, "My King will destroy all of you! You are children of Lucifer!"
The sheriff stated that the body camera footage revealed that Michael and his daughters had a conversation about suicide before they were discovered with gunshot wounds to their heads.
The sheriff stated that during a search of the house, deputies found a large collection of firearms, ammunition, and bottled water, but no phones or televisions. Additionally, the sheriff mentioned that "anti-government propaganda" and content from conspiracy theory-related media were also found.
