Florida sheriff discusses suspect's behavior during 2nd Trump assassination attempt arrest.
During his arrest, Ryan Wesley Routh appeared 'untroubled' and 'unconcerned', according to Martin County Sheriff William Snyder.
The Florida sheriff who apprehended the man accused in the second assassination attempt on former President Donald Trump described him as oddly calm.
Sheriff William Snyder of Martin County immediately suspected Ryan Wesley Routh after stopping him in a black Nissan following a Secret Service shooting at Trump International Golf Club in West Palm Beach, Fla., where the former president was playing.
Snyder stated that he observed the individual at the scene had a very detached and flat expression, which made him feel like the situation wasn't affecting the person.
Despite the presence of helicopters and police lights, Routh did not inquire about the reason for Snyder's arrest.
On Sunday, while Trump was playing the fifth hole at the golf course, Routh was reportedly in possession of an AK-47. He was later arrested in Martin County, according to Snyder.
During a press conference, Palm Beach County Sheriff Ric Bradshaw revealed that the plot was thwarted when a Secret Service agent spotted the rifle while walking on the golf course ahead of Trump's group.
Routh was 300 to 500 yards away from Trump, authorities said.
Snyder stated that every American with common sense acknowledges the appalling nature of the situation, regardless of their political stance, and finds it horrific.
The former president of the United States is a potential candidate for the next presidency, but he is currently out golfing.
Authorities recovered two backpacks, bullet-deflecting ceramic plates, and a GoPro camera from Routh.
The AK-47 was also recovered by authorities.
Snyder expressed his disbelief and disappointment that a man with a tactical rifle and sighting on it was present on a golf course where the former president of the United States was playing, stating that it was a reflection of the current state of affairs in America.
Routh was commended by Snyder for the efforts of local law enforcement in capturing him.
"I believe the law enforcement officers in Palm Beach County did their utmost to safeguard President Trump. I suspect they will intensify their efforts and take additional measures in the future," he stated.
The president, like Snyder, commended the Secret Service for their prompt response during the incident, where he was surrounded and safely escorted back to the clubhouse in a golf cart after hearing gunfire.
In Butler, Pa., two months ago, Trump was shot in the right ear by an assassin during a rally. After the second attempt on his life, Trump assured his supporters that he was "safe and well."
The former president stated in a fundraising email that there were gunshots in his vicinity, but before rumors spread, he wanted to assure everyone that he was safe and well.
"I will never surrender and will always love you for supporting me," Trump declared.
