Florida sheriff advises parents to take responsibility after students make false school threats.
The number of fake threats in Volusia County has escalated, according to Sheriff Mike Chitwood.
In less than a day, dozens of hoax school threats were posted on social media, resulting in an investigation costing nearly $21,000 by a Florida sheriff.
On Friday, Volusia County Sheriff Mike Chitwood and Volusia Public Schools officials held a news conference, with Chitwood characterizing the situation as "completely unmanageable."
In less than 24 hours, 54 threats were reported to the Fortify Florida app, which enables citizens to report suspicious activity to law enforcement agencies.
The sheriff stated that investigators in the school district have been working tirelessly to investigate these false tips, which have cost $21,000 so far.
The sheriff's office has been contacted by Planet Chronicle Digital for details on the cost of the investigations and how they will be funded.
Two Heritage Middle School students, aged 13 and 14, were arrested and charged with a felony for making written threats to kill after posting about committing a school shooting on TikTok and Instagram. A third suspect is being investigated.
Chitwood stated that law enforcement will "pursue" parents of children who make false school violence threats.
""I'm going to start raising your kids, parents. Every time we make an arrest, your kid's photo will be put out there. And if I could do it, I'm going to perp walk your kid so that everyone can see what your kid's up to," Chitwood said."
If a parent is aware of their child's actions and fails to take action, the sheriff will ensure that both the parent and child will be arrested and paraded in public.
"Chitwood exclaimed, "This is absolutely ridiculous. Talk to the families who have lost a loved one in a school shooting. These little knuckleheads think it's funny. See how funny this is not.""
The sheriff made comments regarding the shooting at Apalachee High School, where two 14-year-old students and two teachers were killed by a 14-year-old student, just under two weeks ago.
