Florida politician accused of DUI: "I believe the mayor is intoxicated"
On the evening of Aug 28, a couple called police after Naples Mayor Teresa Heitmann allegedly followed them home.
On August 28, Mayor Teresa Heitmann of Naples, Florida, was arrested for the suspicion of driving under the influence.
A man and his wife called the police after an unknown woman in a silver vehicle followed them from downtown Naples to their residence.
The unknown woman pulled over in front of the couple's residence upon their arrival, according to the police statement.
The woman parked in the front yard after a brief exchange with the callers, prompting the couple to contact the police.
According to NBC 2, a caller reported that the mayor appeared to be drunk and drove over their mailbox in a 911 call.
The footage obtained by NBC 2 shows Mayor Heitmann appearing to distance herself from her title while interacting with officers when the police arrived.
In the footage, an officer is heard asking Mrs. Mayor to come over to Heitmann's location.
"I am not the mayor, I am Teresa Heitmann," she replies.
Police arrested Mrs. Heitmann for driving under the influence after she agreed to a field sobriety test and officers found probable cause.
The mayor was taken to Naples Jail Center and agreed to take a breathalyzer test to determine her blood-alcohol content. The results showed that she had a BAC of 0.155 and 0.169, which exceeds the legal limit of 0.08 in Florida.
"The Naples City Manager, Jay Boodheshwar, stated that city employees were saddened by the incident involving the Mayor. However, he assured the community that the City team is committed to serving residents and has 100% confidence that employees will not let the incident affect service delivery."
James Derek Verderamo, attorney for Planet Chronicle Digital, was contacted for comment regarding Heitmann.
