Florida man injures parents after being told to quit gaming and find work.
Murder and attempted murder charges will be filed against Joseph Voigt, 23.
A man from Florida is accused of shooting his parents, killing his father and injuring his mother, following an argument over his excessive gaming and lack of employment.
On Saturday at 11:20 p.m., Susan Voigt, 58, reported that her son Joseph Voigt, 23, had fled the scene after leaving Marvin Voigt, 63, dead and Susan Voigt with a gunshot wound to the head. Police responded to the incident.
The Bartow Police Department discovered Marvin Voigt dead in the driveway with gunshot wounds and Susan Voigt inside the house with a serious gunshot injury. She was rushed to the hospital in critical condition.
"According to Fox 13, police chief Stephen Walker informed reporters that the mother was discovered sitting upright on the couch. She was alive but had sustained a gunshot wound to the head."
""It's sad to see something like this happen, as we've heard that this couple were really good people," Walker added."
Authorities in Polk County and nearby regions were instructed to keep an eye out for Joseph Voight's vehicle. His vehicle was discovered around 2 a.m. Sunday morning on International Drive in Orlando, prompting Orlando Police to conduct a felony traffic stop on Voigt's vehicle and apprehend him.
Bartow Police, with the help of the Polk County Sheriff's Office, announced that Joseph Voigt admitted to shooting his parents.
According to the sheriff's office, Joseph Voigt informed deputies that his father was displeased with him for spending a majority of his time playing video games and had been urging him to take control of his life and acquire employment.
"Something silly upset him, and it was senseless, Walker said."
On Monday morning, Joseph Voigt was seen in Orange County court. He will be taken to Polk County jail and charged with murder and attempted murder.
He was arrested for battery and released from jail on Dec. 1, according to arrest records. His criminal history also includes arrests for firing a weapon in a residential area.
"The Bartow Police Department swiftly captured the violent and dangerous suspect thanks to their quick response, Polk County sheriff Grady Judd stated in a statement. "We were pleased to assist and our detectives will continue to investigate the crime to ensure that Voigt is held accountable for his actions.""
Walker stated that the shooting was tragic and senseless, causing deep sadness.
