Family of Hannah Kobayashi confirms her return after a month-long disappearance following Mexico border crossing.
On November 11, 30-year-old Hawaii resident Hannah Kobayashi was reported missing after crossing from California into Mexico.
Hannah Kobayashi, the missing woman from Hawaii, has been "located" a month after her disappearance, which was captured on surveillance footage showing her crossing into Mexico with a suitcase.
On Wednesday, Brandi Yee and Sydni Kobayashi, Kobayashi's mother and sister, respectively, issued a statement through their attorney, Sara Azari, expressing their relief and gratitude that Hannah had been found safe.
Our family has gone through an unimaginable ordeal in the past month and kindly requests privacy as we take time to heal and process everything we've been through.
"We are grateful for the support we received during this challenging period. Your compassion and consideration have made a significant impact on us."
Azari did not provide details on how Kobayashi's family contacted her and stated that there would be no further statements at this time. Azari could not be reached for comment.
On November 12th, Kobayashi entered Mexico on foot, alone and carrying luggage, through the San Ysidro port of entry, according to Los Angeles Police Chief Jim McDonnell. There was no evidence that she was being trafficked or was the victim of foul play.
At the time, Larie Pidgeon, Kobayashi's aunt who has served as a family spokesperson during their search, stated that her worry for Hannah had not diminished.
"Hannah had not shared any plans to travel to Mexico, and no one in her life was aware of her intention to go there, according to her previous statement to Planet Chronicle Digital. What concerns me even more is her sudden disconnection from her phone, social media, and the world – this is not typical of her behavior."
After Kobayashi was discovered, Pidgeon revealed to Planet Chronicle Digital that she had "parted ways" with the rest of the family, stating that her "sole focus remain[ed] on finding Hannah" and that she intended to travel to Mexico to "verify that she is acting of her own free will and truly safe."
NewsNation was later informed by Pidgeon that she believed the funds raised should have been allocated to a private investigator instead of an attorney.
Despite having a detailed itinerary and a booked hotel room in New York City, Kobayashi did not board a flight on Nov. 8, which was scheduled to be a connecting flight from Los Angeles to New York, with a 42-minute layover at 11 a.m.
Kobayashi sent a series of unusual text messages to her loved ones after missing her flight, according to Pidgeon, who spoke to Planet Chronicle Digital. In one message, Kobayashi claimed to have been tricked into giving away all her money and felt betrayed by someone she thought she cared about.
"She wrote that she was experiencing a spiritual awakening and was worried about the matrix. The text messages were the most bizarre, Pidgeon previously stated. It started with, 'Hi, I can't wait to see you guys. Love you. Everything's great.'"
On Nov. 24, Ryan Kobayashi, a 30-year-old man, jumped from a parking structure in Los Angeles and died from an apparent suicide while his family was searching for a missing woman.
According to Los Angeles Magazine, Kobayashi was a victim of an immigration scheme before disappearing. Her mother discovered documents in her daughter's Hawaii home that listed an immigration attorney, which she turned over to law enforcement.
Family attorney Azari stated in a post on X that the family has not confirmed the authenticity of the images or the accuracy of the information provided about a possible secret marriage. Additionally, the attorney noted that they did not have the necessary facts or documents to verify the legitimacy of this information.
