Family claims that an Indiana toddler died after consuming a pill found in a thrift store backpack.
The girl's family stated that the pill was Suboxone, a medication used to treat opioid addiction.
A suboxone pill found in a thrift store backpack led to the death of an Indiana toddler, her family claims.
On Sept. 4, Azana Trentman, an 18-month-old child, became unresponsive and was rushed to the hospital. Despite efforts, the child was pronounced dead on Sept. 8, according to KFVS12.
The cause of death for the toddler is still being investigated by the Dearborn County Sheriff's Office, according to KFVS12.
According to Harvard Medical School, Suboxone is a medication used to treat opioid addiction.
On Sept. 7, Azana's grandmother, Tawnya Wood, wrote on Facebook that the child's parents, Austen Trentman and Shayna Wood, took her to a thrift store in Dillsboro, where she was playing with a backpack as they browsed through the store.
"Azana consumed something from her backpack and Austen immediately acted to clear her mouth and induce vomiting, unsure of what it was. The substance tasted sweet and had a melted candy consistency. Since Azana appeared normal, they concluded it was probably candy and continued with their day."
After realizing her urgent medical needs, the girl's parents rushed her to Cincinnati Children's Hospital Medical Center for stabilization and transport.
Azana's grandmother wrote that after several days of testing, the toxicology report revealed that the substance was a fruit-flavored dissolvable suboxone pill.
Despite Azana's untimely death, her parents opted to donate her organs to benefit three individuals.
Azana's donation will not only save and improve the lives of 3 recipients but will also be a way for Azana to live on through them, according to the girl's grandmother in another post.
As of Saturday morning, the GoFundMe page established for the child during her hospitalization has surpassed $19,000 in donations.
The sheriff's office has been contacted by Planet Chronicle Digital for additional details.
