Evacuations and Highway 1 shutdown prompted by fire at Central California power plant.
The closure of Highway 1 is due to an unknown fire severity.
An emergency alert was issued by Monterey County on Thursday evening, informing the public that the North County Fire Department is currently responding to a fire at the Moss Landing Power Plant in Central California. Some regions are now under evacuation orders.
An emergency evacuation was ordered by the Moss County Sheriff's Office due to a fire at the Vistra power plant in the areas of Moss Landing, Elkhorn Slough, Molera Road, Monterey Dunes Way, Castroville Blvd, and ElkHorn Road.
Authorities have closed Highway 1 and advised residents in the Moss Landing area behind the plant to evacuate due to an unknown severity fire, according to Monterey County officials.
The NCFPD advises residents in Zones MRY-B047 and MRY-B053 to close windows and doors and turn off air systems immediately. It is recommended to stay away from the area to enable emergency vehicles to respond.
Currently, there is no estimated time for reopening. Meanwhile, northbound traffic is being diverted at Highway 183, and southbound to Struve Road.
An evacuation center has been established at the Castroville Recreation Center (11261 Crane St., Castroville) to assist evacuees.
The fire has been put out, but the cause has not been determined and will be investigated.
This is a developing story.
