Grey Bull Rescue collaborated with Musk and first responders over the weekend to establish Starlink satellite devices in the Los Angeles region.
"In the aftermath of disasters, effective communication is crucial, especially in areas where communication infrastructure has been destroyed, as seen in California. Yesterday, Grey Bull Rescue assisted the Los Angeles County Fire Department (LACFD) by deploying Starlink mini units to provide critical communication in areas affected by wildfires."
Starlink has been requested by LACFD and other emergency services agencies in California for disaster communication purposes, but bureaucratic procedures hindered this mission-critical need.
On Sunday, Tesla founder and CEO Elon Musk announced that he would be donating Cybertrucks in addition to Starlink to impacted areas.
"He wrote on X, which he owns, that he apologizes to those expecting Cybertruck deliveries in California over the next few days. He explained that the trucks will be used as mobile base stations to provide power to Starlink Internet terminals in areas of LA without connectivity. He added that a new truck will be delivered at the end of the week."
LACFD sought assistance from Grey Bull Rescue for a "mission-critical internet gap."
"This is where the private sector shows its number one capability: SPEED." — Bryan Stern, Grey Bull Rescue chair
"Six hours later, the problem was solved with the gold standard in austere environment communications: Starlink, thanks to Elon Musk's commitment to supporting rescue efforts. He personally delivered hundreds more additional Starlink minis to Grey Bull Rescue and the LACFD at their staging site."
Starlink internet is crucial for Grey Bull Rescue volunteers to carry out their missions in areas with limited communication, according to Stern.
In late September, after Hurricane Helene left thousands without power or internet in the western North Carolina region, Musk donated numerous Starlinks to aid survivors in contacting first responders and loved ones.
The Grey Bull Rescue team has been working alongside first responders since the beginning of the wildfires to improve connectivity and support them in safely evacuating residents and delivering critical humanitarian aid, as the Grey Bull Rescue chair stated.
"Every action and minute is crucial in times like these. We are dedicated to providing assistance in any way we can to those affected by this devastating disaster."
As of Monday, the Palisades Fire, the Eaton Fire, and the Hurst Fire were the three active wildfires in L.A. County, reducing entire neighborhoods to ash and claiming at least 24 lives after burning for a week in Southern California.
