Eaton Fire survivor, a single mom, praises Altadena's resilience and determination.
Brenda King recounts the day she witnessed 'the gates of hell opening on the mountain'.
Despite losing everything in the Eaton Fire in Altadena, a single mother from California is praising her community's resilience, stating that their tenacity and spirit remain unbroken.
Brenda King stated on Friday that she has resided in California and Los Angeles for over 20 years, but she always felt a strong connection to Altadena due to its unique energy and the love and care put into it by its citizens.
The day the fire broke out, it was bizarre because I had just figured out a little promotion for myself at work and my 5-year-old son was going to get his own room in the property I was renting.
The Eaton Fire abruptly ended King's vision of finding her son his "first big boy bed" on Facebook Marketplace and organizing his toys and favorite books on a shelf.
King stated to Planet Chronicle Digital that she was with a friend when she suddenly saw "what looks like hell opening up on the mountain."
"Just this long line, heading towards my house. We were examining it when I exclaimed, 'Oh my God, where is that? That's so close to my house,'" she said.
She added, "I was like, 'They'll get this under control, but I have to go home and get my dog.'"
She returned home to save her pet, gather her son's belongings, and retrieve photo albums from her childhood.
She escaped Altadena but later contacted a neighbor whose father stayed there, who said, "It's gone. Everything's gone." I couldn't believe it.
Despite losing her home and nearly all of her possessions, the community she was a part of in Altadena remains strong.
"King recounted to Planet Chronicle Digital how he was watching the news and saw his beloved city burning everywhere. The news reporter, who was not a resident of Altadena, was astonished by the number of people still helping and putting water on their neighbor's lawns, despite the devastation. King lamented that the city, which is essentially nothing left except its lives, was still being fought for by its residents."
King expressed his deep regret for the loss of lives in Altadena, stating that although people have lost their lives, they have not lost their tenacity and spirit.
A GoFundMe has been established to aid King in rebuilding after the wildfire caused significant damage.
"King stated to Planet Chronicle Digital that he has resided in numerous diverse locations, and Altadena holds a special place in his heart. He has not found happiness, community, and love in any other part of L.A. as he did in Altadena."
