In Washington, D.C., a man is recovering in the hospital after bravely shielding his 21-year-old girlfriend during a near-fatal carjacking.
According to FOX 5, at around 8 p.m. on Monday in Northwest D.C., a masked individual approached the couple in their car and demanded they hand over the vehicle.
According to the report, the suspect shot each member of the couple five times as they attempted to flee.
The woman's family stated that her boyfriend protected her by shielding her with his body and taking the brunt of the bullets, resulting in a punctured lung.
Despite escaping the armed suspect, the pair later crashed a quarter-mile down the road.
A good Samaritan called the family to let them know what had happened.
"I was initially taken aback when I heard about the situation," the family member said to FOX 5. "I asked her to come closer so I could hear her voice and confirm that she was okay. It's crucial for everyone to feel safe when they leave their homes. They shouldn't have to worry about losing their possessions or their lives."
According to the report, the woman who underwent surgery is likely to require more procedures.
As of Wednesday night, D.C. police have not publicly identified a suspect, according to FOX 5.
