During a DUI stop, a Virginia state trooper was hit by another impaired driver who crashed into the patrol vehicle.
The dashcam footage from the patrol vehicle revealed a terrifying incident that miraculously resulted in only minor injuries to the trooper, according to police.
An impaired driver struck a Virginia state trooper's patrol vehicle while she was stopped with another motorist for suspected drunk driving.
On Tuesday, at approximately 3 a.m., Trooper C. Aziz arrived at a sedan that had stopped in the northbound lane of Interstate 495 in Fairfax County.
The sedan driver remained inside the vehicle and refused to comply with the trooper's instructions to exit or relocate the car to a safer location, according to state police.
A Jeep Cherokee collided with a tractor-trailer that had stopped in a travel lane due to the sedan driver's actions.
The tractor-trailer was hit so hard by the Jeep that it spun around and struck the patrol car, which then hit the sedan and the trooper who was standing outside the sedan's driver-side door.
The trooper's dashcam captured the incident, which "incredibly" resulted in only minor injuries for her, according to police. She was transported to Fairfax INOVA Hospital for an evaluation.
Joanna Hatch, 35, was identified as the driver of the Jeep and was arrested for driving under the influence of alcohol, according to police.
Erica Bernard, 43, was the driver of the sedan stopped on the side of the interstate and was also arrested. She is charged with driving under the influence of drugs, obstruction, possession of a schedule 1 or 2 substance, refusal of a breathalyzer/blood test, and improperly stopping a vehicle on a highway.
Both Hatch and Bernard were taken to the Fairfax County Adult Detention Center.
