Despite voluntarily crossing the border, Hannah Kobayashi did not disclose any travel plans to Mexico to her family.
No evidence of foul play found in Kobayashi's disappearance, according to LAPD.
Despite police claims that Hannah Kobayashi, a 30-year-old woman from Hawaii, crossed the border into Mexico on her own accord, her family will continue searching for her.
On Monday, the Los Angeles Police Department Chief Jim McDonnell stated that surveillance footage and other evidence revealed Kobayashi entering Mexico on foot, alone and carrying luggage, at the San Ysidro port of entry on November 12th.
Larie Pidgeon, Kobayashi's aunt, who has served as a family spokesperson throughout their three-week search, stated that her concern for Hannah has not diminished.
"Hannah did not reveal any plans to travel to Mexico, and no one in her life knew she intended to go there," she wrote in a statement to Planet Chronicle Digital on Tuesday. "What concerns me even more is her complete disconnection from her phone, her social media, and her world – this is not the person she is."
"She couldn't stop replaying the last messages her friend and family sent, even though she tried to make sense of it, she couldn't."
McDonnell stated that there was no evidence to suggest that she was being trafficked or was a victim of foul play.
"We urge Ms. Kobayashi to reach out to her family, law enforcement or embassy personnel to inform them of her safety. While we respect her privacy, we understand the concern her loved ones have for her and a message could reassure them."
Despite having a detailed itinerary and a booked hotel room in New York City, Kobayashi did not board her connecting flight to New York on Nov. 8, with a 42-minute layover at 11 a.m. Her family is still unsure why.
This week, McDonnell stated that detectives concluded that Kobayashi deliberately missed her flight, a claim that her family refuted.
On November 11, 2021, Kobayashi was seen on camera at L.A. Union Station buying a bus ticket to the southern border while carrying a pink suitcase and wearing a sweatsuit.
Kobayashi sent a series of unusual text messages to her loved ones after missing her flight, according to Pidgeon, who spoke to Planet Chronicle Digital. In one message, Kobayashi claimed to have been tricked into giving away all her money and felt betrayed by someone she thought she cared about.
"She wrote that she was experiencing a spiritual awakening and was worried about the matrix. The text messages were the most bizarre, Pidgeon previously stated. It started with, 'Hi, I can't wait to see you guys. Love you. Everything's great.'"
Although the LAPD has closed the case, Pidgeon's family's search for her in Mexico is ongoing. They are working on a safe and effective plan to contact her.
She will not stop until she can confirm, face-to-face, that her niece is safe and making these decisions of her own accord, and until she knows her niece is safe and in a good mental state. The family has hired a private investigator to help.
The missing woman's aunt expressed gratitude for the police's efforts but criticized the family's lack of information about the search's progress until the LAPD's Monday press conference.
Ryan Kobayashi, the father of Pidgeon and Kobayashi, stated that LAPD detectives did not contact him until 11 days after his daughter went missing, despite previously being found dead of an apparent suicide.
The LAPD could not immediately be reached for comment.
The RAD Movement hotline at 619-904-0840 is being requested for anyone with information by Kobayashi's family.
