Dentist accused of trying to kill detective after being charged with killing wife by poisoning her.
James Toliver Craig, a Colorado dentist, is accused of attempting to persuade a fellow inmate to murder the detective investigating his wife's death.
A Colorado dentist accused of killing his wife by poisoning her protein shakes now faces a new charge for allegedly trying to get a fellow inmate to murder a detective investigating his homicide case.
The 18th Judicial District Attorney's Office announced on social media that James Toliver Craig, 45, was charged with solicitation to commit murder in the first degree and solicitation to commit perjury in the first degree.
Angela Craig, Craig's wife of 23 years, was killed in a murder that Craig was previously arrested and charged with. Despite this, Craig pleaded not guilty to the first-degree murder charge.
In March 2023, a 43-year-old mother of six died of poisoning from cyanide and tetrahydrozoline, a substance found in over-the-counter eye drops, according to the coroner.
According to court records and sources familiar with the investigation, authorities believe Craig attempted to persuade another inmate in the Arapahoe County jail to murder an Aurora police detective who was investigating Angela's 2023 death. Joe Moylan, an Aurora police spokesman, confirmed to CBS News that the intended victim of the alleged plot was an Aurora detective.
No other inmate has been accused of any wrongdoing related to the alleged plot to kill the detective, KUSA reported.
In May, Craig was accused of asking a fellow inmate to plant letters in his garage and truck to make it seem like his wife was suicidal, offering money to pay the inmate's bond in exchange for being released from jail or performing free dental work.
The inmate who informed authorities about the incident believed that the letters that appeared to be written by Angela were actually penned by Craig.
According to police, Craig allegedly created a secret email account and searched online for things like "How to make murder look like a heart attack" and "How to make poison" just days before his wife experienced symptoms like vertigo, shaking, and cold lips.
According to the arrest affidavit, Angela visited a hospital three times before her death due to fainting and dizziness.
Craig, according to authorities, conducted research and bought "undetectable poisons" and ordered a shipment of potassium cyanide to his dental practice.
Aurora police Detective Bobbi Olson wrote in the affidavit that James has gone to great lengths to try and end his wife's life.
Craig's lawyers argued that there is no direct evidence that he poisoned his wife's shakes and accused Olson of bias against him.
Craig allegedly flew his orthodontist lover from Austin to Denver while his wife was dying and exchanged "sexually explicit emails," according to the arrest affidavit.

Over the past 16 years, Angela Craig repeatedly informed her sister Toni Kofoed of her plans to leave her husband, but he consistently convinced her to remain. The couple was on the brink of declaring bankruptcy for a second time, as indicated by the documents.
Craig had "multiple affairs with several women" and drugged his wife about five years earlier, according to Kofoed, who told police that he had planned to die by suicide and didn't want his wife to stop him.
The trial for Craig, who is accused of murdering his wife, has been postponed because his defense attorney requested to withdraw from the case due to a "professional conflict," as stated by the 18th Judicial District Attorney's Office.
The 18th Judicial District Attorney's Office has scheduled the next hearing for Craig's case on December 16th.
