Dartmouth students face charges after the death of a 20-year-old at a party.
According to Won Jang's parents, the 20-year-old who was discovered in the Connecticut River was unable to swim.
Two sorority members and a fraternity member have been charged following a fatal party at Dartmouth, which occurred several months ago.
In Hanover, New Hampshire, the Alpha Phi sorority was accused of being a corporation and was charged with one count of aiding an underage alcohol house. Meanwhile, two members of the Beta Alpha Omega fraternity were also charged with giving alcohol to someone under 21.
Dartmouth is located in Hanover.
An off-campus party on July 6 led to the charges against Won Jang, 20.
Some attendees went for a swim in the Connecticut River after the party hosted by Alpha Phi, where alcohol was allegedly provided by Beta Alpha Omega, police said, adding most of the partygoers were under 21.
Jang, despite his family's claim that he couldn't swim, joined the group but was unintentionally left behind when it started raining and others departed.
Authorities discovered his body in the river, about 65 feet from shore, the day after he was reported missing.
According to ABC News, he exceeded the legal limit of 0.08% in New Hampshire, which is 0.02% for those under 21.
Dartmouth values the contributions of Greek organizations to the student experience, as long as they adhere to their stated values and standards, according to a statement shared with Planet Chronicle Digital.
All Dartmouth students, community members, and organizations have a responsibility to maintain a safe, respectful, equitable, and inclusive community for students, faculty, and staff.
"Dartmouth suspended Alpha Phi and Beta Alpha Omega following the tragic loss of Won Jang during the summer, and an internal investigation was initiated. The suspensions remain in effect until the results of Dartmouth's internal investigation and conduct process are determined, which is still ongoing."
