Dallas Police Department Officer Darron Burks was killed in a targeted attack, according to the police chief.
Thursday night, two other officers were injured.
The Dallas Police Department gave an emotional update following the death of Officer Darron Burks, who was "executed" while on duty.
On Friday, Dallas Police Chief Eddie Garcia stated that the department had lost a "colleague" and a "brave officer" after a shooting.
"Garcia, speaking as a department and a family, expressed devastation after the loss of Officer Darron Burks, who was a brother, a hero, a son, a nephew, a friend, and was senselessly and tragically murdered in the line of duty."
On Thursday night, around 10 p.m., a shooting near the Oak Cliff Community Center resulted in the death of Burks and the injury of two other officers. The suspected gunman, Corey Cobb-Bey, was killed in a shootout with police.
"Garcia stated that we almost lost other officers who risked their lives to safeguard their comrades. It is through God's mercy that they remain with us today."
Cobb-Bey "targeted" the police officers, according to the chief of police.
Our officers were targeted by nothing more than the uniforms that they wear. — Dallas Police Department Chief Eddie Garcia
"Our officers were targeted solely because of their uniforms and the courageous job they do, as stated by the speaker." "It is important to clarify that the term 'ambush' has been used in the past 24 hours, but what occurred here was an execution of Officer Burks."
Cobb-Bey struck up a conversation with Burks while recording the encounter on a cellphone before pulling out a handgun and opening fire, according to Garcia. However, police stated that there is no evidence that Burks and Cobb-Bey knew each other.
"As Officer Burks sat in his vehicle, Cobb-Bey approached him and talked briefly at the driver's side of the window. The suspect then pulled out a handgun and executed Officer Burks."
Officers discovered Burks critically injured in his marked patrol vehicle after receiving a 911 call about an officer in distress.
At 10:11 p.m., Farmer arrived at the parking lot following a call for backup. Upon his arrival, Cobb-Bey opened fire on him. In response, Farmer fired back. Cobb-Bey then seized the shotgun and aimed it at Farmer, striking him in the leg.
A minute later, Senior Corporal Karissa David arrived on the scene.
David was shot at multiple times by Cobb-Bey as she ran toward him while exiting her vehicle.
David was shot in the face, according to police.
Two officers were shot while exchanging gunfire with the suspect.
A high-speed police chase on Interstate 35 from Dallas to Lewisville resulted in the suspect's death by gunshot.
Sources reported that Burks, a former high school math teacher at the Texas Can Academy's Pleasant Grove Campus, enrolled in the police academy due to his passion for helping his community, according to FOX 4.
Officer Burks, who had been a teacher at Texas Can Academy's Pleasant Grove Campus, bravely left the field of education to become a member of the Dallas Police Department. His commitment to serving others, both as a teacher and as a police officer, exemplified his dedication to making a positive impact on the lives of those around him, wrote Tina Shaw, the principal at the campus.
One former student, Adrian Coleman, said that Burks mentored troubled youths.
"Coleman, a troubled youth, ensured that he imparted knowledge and equipped me with the necessary tools to succeed, to become a responsible man in this world, as he shared with the local outlet. "I am deeply grateful for his guidance and the time he spent with me," he stated."
Last year, Burks enrolled in the Dallas Police Academy as a rookie officer.
