Couple dies in car crash on Colorado interstate just days after wedding when semi overturns.
Juliana Rodriguez-Plata and Ruben Rodriguez abandon their 1-year-old son.
Tragically, a joyful season turned into mourning after a newlywed couple was killed in a fatal accident on Interstate 70 in Colorado just days after their wedding.
On August 15, at approximately 8:30 a.m. on a Thursday, Ruben Rodriguez, Juliana Rodriguez-Plata, their 1-year-old son, and Juliana's parents were traveling when a semi traveling eastbound rolled over, causing pipes to spill across the highway and colliding with their car.
The Wheat Ridge Police Department stated that the sequence of events in the accident is still unclear, but at some point, the semi lost its cargo, which scattered across the westbound lanes.
On a GoFundMe page, family members recognized the couple and also verified that Juliana Rodriguez-Plata's mother was killed in the accident.
""We are devastated to announce the tragic loss of Ruben Rodriguez, Juliana Rodriguez Plata, and Luz Melba Martinez in an accident. This has been one of the most difficult days we have faced. Ruben and Juliana had only recently started their life together, having celebrated their wedding just this past weekend. They leave behind their precious 1-year-old son, Daniel," Janell Rodriguez wrote in a post."
According to Rodriguez's post, Carlos, Juliana's father from Colombia, was visiting to celebrate the wedding along with Luz Melba Martinez.
In a short period, Carlos has experienced the unbearable pain of losing his daughter and wife.
Fox 31 reported that Plata was in the vehicle when he suddenly lost his daughter, son-in-law, and wife.
"I witnessed the pipes bursting and closed my eyes, feeling the impact. I woke up disoriented and saw the baby crying and everyone unconscious. The accident was horrific, with the sight of the blood and the instant death of my family, including my daughter and wife."
The couple, who tied the knot on Saturday, left behind a 1-year-old son whose birthday they celebrated on Sunday, according to Fox 32.
Tony and Esli Rodriguez, Juliana's niece and nephew, are still in shock, as they shared with Fox 32.
Esli Rodriguez stated, "Although it hasn't fully hit me yet, just thinking about it makes me want to cry because he was so happy, met her, and had a child. I've never seen him this happy."
The debris from the semi that spilled out on I-70 covered more than two football fields and included nearly 100 large blue plastic tubes weighing around 500 lbs. each.
At least seven vehicles, including a semi, were involved in a series of crashes, according to police.
Although individuals desire resolution, this investigation is intricate and will require more time than anticipated, taking several weeks to conclude. We are collaborating with the First Judicial DA's Office of Colorado on potential charges, as stated in a social media post by police.
The police are actively investigating the case and are working hard to gather all the facts and evidence.
The police department and its partners at VOI (Victim Outreach Incorporated) extend their support to the families affected by the tragic loss of life yesterday.
The police are requesting anyone who observed the crash to contact the Crash and Traffic Team (CATT) at (303) 235-2933.
