Chicago: Violence Plagues the Windy City Despite Migrant Gangs' Good Behavior
The host city for the 2024 Democratic National Convention increased security measures due to its history of crime.
Despite increased security measures by Chicago police during the Democratic National Convention, at least 30 people were shot in the city's first three days, including six homicides.
On Wednesday morning, a 25-year-old delegate from Texas was robbed at gunpoint, according to authorities. The same suspect is believed to have stolen from two other individuals in the area.
On the third day of the DNC, 10 people were shot, including one fatally, and a stabbing was reported, according to CPD.
Tuesday saw 12 shooting victims, including one homicide.
According to Paul Mauro, a retired NYPD inspector, as of now, week to day, New York City has double the number of murders compared to Chicago, despite Chicago having less than a third of New York's population. Mauro cited city police statistics that show three murders this week, not just shootings.
Several migrants were seeking employment and selling candy for money in an alleyway near the 2024 Democratic National Convention at the United Center on Thursday afternoon.
According to a local law enforcement source, several individuals in the alley were likely gang members, but authorities did not anticipate any significant issues from them.
The source stated that they were certain the individuals were aware of the need to behave appropriately for the DNC.
"I’m sure they know to be on good behavior for the DNC."
A migrant who arrived in Chicago five months ago from Venezuela described his journey as "very dangerous." He was seeking employment and taking on odd jobs.
An individual who crossed the border from Peru into the U.S. over land stated to Planet Chronicle Digital that he is originally from Cuba and wearing an ankle monitor placed by immigration officials. He claimed that the bracelet is hindering his ability to find employment.
Numerous individuals requested that Planet Chronicle Digital photographers cease capturing images and depart the area.
"Mauro stated that he had observed women and children being sent out to sell candy in New York, which is a common migrant money-making practice, particularly on city transportation systems, such as the subways."

Despite the prevalence of Bulls merchandise and tattoos in Chicago, federal officials have cautioned that these items have also been embraced by Venezuelan gangs who dislike the team.
But crime has continued to plague the city with party elites in town.
Over the weekend before the convention, 30 people were injured in 26 shootings, with five fatalities.
Earlier this year, the Chicago Tribune reported that despite an increase in migrant arrests in the Windy City, most of them were for nonviolent offenses, such as theft.
