California high school principal placed on leave after video of inappropriate dance with mascot surfaces
Buhach Colony High School principal Robert Nunes was placed on administrative leave.
A central California high school principal has been placed on administrative leave after a video emerged of him dancing inappropriately with the school's mascot during a back-to-school rally.
Effective Aug. 19, Robert Nunes, the principal of Buhach Colony High School in Atwater, is on administrative leave, as announced by the Merced Union High School District to Planet Chronicle Digital.
In response to an incident at the back-to-school rally on Aug. 16, the district took this action.
The school district is conducting a thorough examination of the current situation. Although the investigation is still ongoing, Mr. Nunes will not be involved in any school-related duties or activities, as stated by Viviana Fuentes, the director of communications for the district.
Fuentes stated that this decision is in line with their dedication to ensuring a secure and considerate atmosphere for all students and staff.
Nunes is seen in an office chair in the middle of the gym floor, pushing himself backward, and the school's mascot is seductively approaching him as the song "Pony" by Ginuwine is heard playing while the crowd of students watches.
The mascot is swapped with Nunes after he fires a cannon full of gold confetti.
Nunes slides his hands down the mascot's chest in the video.
Nunes and the mascot are joined by several students on the floor, who inquire if he would like to share any words.
The mascot is wheeled off the floor as Nunes shouts, 'What happens at Buhach stays at Buhach!' to the cheering crowd.
Several people have commented on the video with mixed emotions about the dance.
"If the principal is every student's 'best friend', the school will be lost," one person remarked.
"Why must everything be sexualized?" another asked.
Another person wrote that this behavior is truly disgusting and has no place in a school.
Another person disagreed and wrote, "Lighten up. They’re having fun."
The school district will provide updates when necessary while maintaining the confidentiality of the investigation process, as stated by Fuentes.
