Boston City Councilor faces charges of public corruption from the FBI.
Reports indicate that Tania Fernandes Anderson was apprehended in Dorchester.
On Friday morning, a City Councilor was arrested by FBI special agents in Boston on charges of public corruption.
Tania Fernandes Anderson was identified in media reports as the lawmaker mentioned in the bureau's statement, even though the bureau did not provide a name.
According to WCVB, Fernandes Anderson was taken into custody by FBI agents this morning outside her home in Dorchester, which is under investigation by federal authorities.
According to court documents, Fernandes Anderson is facing federal charges of wire fraud and theft in connection with programs that receive federal funds, as stated by the station.
In 2023, the ethics commission in Massachusetts found that Fernandes Anderson had violated the conflict-of-interest law by hiring her sister and son at City Hall after her election in 2021 and then increasing their salaries to $70,000 annually.
In 2022, she reportedly terminated their employment and was fined $5,000.
Last month, WCVB reported that Massachusetts’ Office of Campaign and Political Finance informed her campaign that it exceeded the legal contribution limit and failed to submit timely deposit information.
District 7 is represented by Anderson, encompassing the Boston neighborhoods of Roxbury, Dorchester, Fenway, and a portion of the South End.
According to the City of Boston's website, Councilor Anderson was elected to the Boston City Council on November 2, 2021, making history as the first African immigrant and Muslim-American to hold the position.
Tania was a parent advocate with the Boston Public Schools, program manager for a homeless women's shelter, business owner, and child social worker before serving as Councilor. She has also been a foster mom to 17 kids while raising two biological children.
The FBI is holding a news conference about the arrest at 9:30 a.m. ET, but did not immediately respond to a request for comment by Planet Chronicle Digital.
