Biden condemned gun violence after a Georgia high school shooting left four people dead and many others injured on Wednesday.
Biden stated that Jill and he are grieving for those whose lives were tragically cut short due to senseless gun violence and are also thinking about the survivors whose lives will be forever altered.
The back-to-school season in Winder, Georgia, which should have been joyful, has now become another horrific reminder of how gun violence continues to tear our communities apart. Students across the country are learning how to duck and cover instead of how to read and write. We cannot continue to accept this as normal.
Biden stated that they are closely collaborating with officials at the federal, state, and local levels and expressed gratitude to the first responders who apprehended the suspect and averted any additional casualties.
Biden stated that the Bipartisan Safer Communities Act, which he signed into law, is a significant gun safety bill and that he has taken numerous executive actions to address gun violence.
Biden added that he established the first-ever White House Office of Gun Violence Prevention, which is overseen by Vice President Harris.
Biden stated that although we have made considerable advancements, the crisis demands further action. After years of inactivity, Congressional Republicans must take responsibility and cooperate with Democrats to enact reasonable gun control legislation.
Biden emphasized that we must ban assault weapons and high-capacity magazines, require safe storage of firearms, enact universal background checks, and end immunity for gun manufacturers. These measures will not bring back those who were tragically killed, but it will help prevent more tragic gun violence from tearing apart more families.
On Wednesday, at least four individuals lost their lives following a shooting at a high school in north central Georgia, resulting in the building being placed on lockdown, according to authorities.
Four people died and nine others were injured at Apalachee High School in Barrow County, Georgia, which is about 40 miles northeast of Atlanta. The suspect is now in custody.
