Beware of 'Amber Alert' scams targeting Californians
In an attempt to gather personal information, scammers are posing as Amber Alert representatives while registering children.
The CHP issued a warning on social media about a new scam affecting California residents.
Amber Alert "representatives" are not actually registering children, but rather posing as them and asking for personal information at homes.
The AMBER Alert system does not function this way!
The Amber Alert, a law aimed at safeguarding children, was named after Amber Hagerman, a 9-year-old girl from Arlington, Texas, who was abducted and killed in 1996.
The public was quickly informed of child abductions through the creation of a nationwide alert system.
The CHP emphasized in their post that they are the sole agency authorized to issue Amber Alerts for the state.
The agency advised the public to never provide personal information or answer calls from "possible scam" numbers, and to immediately contact law enforcement if contacted by a scammer.
